We slept in until 7am, mostly because we didn’t want to get
up in the rain. They served coffee then we started packing. Breakfast was
cereal and muffins and more coffee and then we started hauling stuff to the
canoe launch for Luke to paddle to the staging post closer to the falls. From
there we started the portage. 1.3 km each way. Quite a performance! I did 3 trips and was knackered at the end.
Sam did 4, including carrying an 80 lb canoe down beyond the boardwalk.
Champion! Thank goodness as the rest of
us were not up to it.
Jason was tying two pairs of the canoes together forming
what they called “catacanoes” because he
and Luke were not convinced that we were experienced enough to go alone.
Loading the canoes was bit of an effort and took a while and
we didn’t get out on the river until after 4.
Sam and I were with Luke and Judy in one catacanoe and we
took off first. It was very exhilarating going down through the rapids of
Fourth Canyon and it was a beautiful afternoon.
We canoed for about 90 minutes and then stopped on a pebble
bar at Marango creek for the night.
First job was collecting firewood, then Sam and I put our
tent near the creek and had a dip in the creek. It was delicious! Craig and Pete were just along the creek from
us and as Pete was coming up stark naked after his dip their tent flew away in
the wind. Quite entertaining to see him chasing it and trying to preserve his
modesty!
