Woke up at 7:10 with the sun shining and warm temperatures.
We’re getting better at the daily routine of packing up
camp, especially as Sam helped me with my air mattress which is a pig to
deflate and roll up.
Breakfast was porridge, French toast, bacon and maple syrup.
Delicious! Sam had 6 bits of French
toast!
Then it was time to pack up and load the canoes. We had
persuaded Luke that we should be allowed to paddle solo so spent some time
disassembling our catacanoe from yesterday. Sam was in the stern, and it was
great! We went through about three series of category 2 rapids including the
Figure of Eight Rapids and the Wrigley Whirlpool which were quite exciting but
not too dramatic.
At one stage we saw what Jason said was a golden eagle
taking off from a tree in the other side, giving that very characteristic and
thrilling screech.
We stopped beyond at Mary River for the night. As we were
unloading the boats we saw a black bear emerge from the river in the other
side, it must have been on our side when we landed.
The camp was on an island and firewood was easy to find.
Pierre produced some rum which went down well. Dinner was a
very good Greek salad followed by a mushroom risotto and then an apple and
cinnamon pie done in the Dutch oven, with some box shiraz. Luke produced a
Chaga and chocolate tea and Jason some Baileys so the night ended well!
